6150 chrome vanadium steel

AISI 6150 Medium Carbon Chrome-Vanadium Alloy Steel

·                     Hot Roll Finish

·                     Hot Roll Finish T and B with Saw Cut Edges

Description

Most popular steel sold for high strength, impact and fatigue strength at moderate hardness.

·                     Excellent fatigue and impact resistance at moderate hardness

·                     Good machinability

·                     High degree of cleanliness

·                     Adaptable to most machine parts twice as strong as cold drawn C-1018, in annealed condition.

USES

Recommended when excellent fatigue and impact resistance at moderate hardnesses is desirable. As a die steel, it should be used only for short run die applications.

Has no peer for tool holders, arbors, gears, crankshafts, cutting tool shanks, wrenches, rams and moderately loaded brake dies. Has been found highly satisfactory for chuckjaws and collets when quenched and tempered, and for plastic molds, either pre-tempered or hardened.

TYPICAL ANALYSIS

SULPHUR….0.025 CHROMIUM…..1.03 VANADIUM……...0.23

HEAT TREATMENT

FORGING ………………………………..1850°F to 1900°F, stop at 1650°F

ANNEALING ……………………………1500°F, furnace cool. Brinell 202

HARDENING …………………………….1575° to 1650°F, oil quench

TEMPERING ……………………………...300° to 1100°F, hardness Rockwell C-59 to C-35

MACHINABILITY

Rated at 85, as compared with a rating of 100 for a one percent carbon tool steel.

TEMPERING RESULTS

The following results were obtained on 1" round by 3" long specimens quenched from 1575° F to hardness of 60 Rockwell C. Quench temperatures lower than 1575° F will result in correspondingly lower tempered hardness and strength.
